Hi there,

I have a live recording (captured onto minidisc) that i'm trying to clean up. Basically, the bass is too high - to the point of getting muddy and getting a bit in the way of the rest. I have used a paragraphic EQ against low rumble and this - i think - has helped a bit. But i don't really know anything and was wondering about the best way (other EQs? plugin?) to get the bass lower/tighter and make the recording more balanced. Any help would be great.

Cheers.

use the parametric, notching the low end starting at 47hz and go up from there until the annoyance starts to disappear.. but bear in mind you will have to adjust the other end at about 8000hz or lower as most microphones do not do well in live venues unless placed on stage.

also convert to mono or do an MS stereo compare as most near field stereo mics fail misreably in live situations. usually causing phase inversions or cancelling out signal. which can go either good or bad depending on conditions

A good way to selectively reduce the frequencies you don't want, in this case bass, is to INCREASE the gain on the EQ and slowly sweep up through the frequency range you're dealing with until it really begins to boom. When it does, you know when you've hit the range you want, and then reducing the gain, um, reduces it.
