I have 3 tracks: music, voice, program.

If I were mixing these on a real board, I would group-roll all 3. Riding gain on each track as necessary. Recording, of course, on a 4th track.

What's the Sonic Foundry virtual equivalent? The manual doesn't seem to address this.

Or should I be using a different product to do this?

Thanks.

You're probably looking for Vegas instead of SoundForge. SoundForge only handles a single mono or stereo track. Vegas does multitracking.

In Vegas, you can put all three tracks on the screen at once, set levels throughout the song as necessary, preview until you've got the mix you want, then render the complete mix to a new file.

Thanks.

I'll boot up Vegas and give it a try.

Anything that's not obvious that I will need to know?

You will probably want to insert Volume envelopes on each track. This way you can adjust the volume by adding nodes throughout the song and moving them up or down as needed. Pan envelopes might be useful too if you want to change the positioning of each track in the stereo field throughout the song, but normally using a set pan for the entire track is sufficient.

Unlike SoundForge where you save the end result to a new file, the Save function in Vegas only creates a .veg project file. This file is a record of the editing steps you have taken, but does not contain the actual music itself. To generate the output file you have to use File / Render As.

Just to be thorough, Sound Forge 7.0 lets you save in the FRG format, which works in the same manner as Vegas' VEG file and ACID's ACD file formats.

You can essentially make as many changes as you want and change them later even after you close the project.

But, Sound Forge doesn't let you use multiple tracks simulaneously.
