Subject:Newbie: enable envelope tool?

Got SF 7.0 and Vegas 4.0 today, completely clueless, but I appreciate help and advice. I have seen this used at my studio and the engineer used points to do volume adjustments - I assume the Envelope Tool. This is grayed out on my home screen. Also Pencil Tool is grayed out. I just loaded a previous song. I have selected an area of a wav file and these choices are still not available. Help please?

My goal: I have made 3 CDs, have recording contract but pay own expenses (never will break even despite sales over 10K discs total). For new CD I want to home record and edit my 6 foot Schimmel grand piano and vocal tracks. Studio will then do mixing and mastering and magic.

Thanks for help and advice.

do i understand correctly that you want to use a volume envelope on a wave file in SF?

if so, you have to enable the volume envelope plugin first. you do this by clicking on the 'Open Plugin Chainer' button which is located right next to the play button in the wave file's window. a new window will pop up.

in this new window add the 'Sound Forge Volume' plugin. when this is done, click anywhere in the wave file and press V on your keyboard. a blue volume envelope line will appear.

when you have set your envelopes and you want to make them permanent, go back to the Plugin Chainer window, and click the 'Process Selection' button (icon is a square with a checkmark). it will now apply your envelope to the wave data.

Thank you so much! This works perfectly.
The help topics do not address this, and it's not in the index of the quick start manual. I have to learn the vocab obviously. I didn't know it was a plug-in.
