I have a file where the person's speaking rate is speeded on one part of the time line, a place where the rate is slowed, and most of the file has correct speaking rate. What tool can I use on the sound file to speed up a section of the speaking? What tool can I us on the sound file to slow down a section of the speaking? There are large parts of the timeline where the rate is fine and I don'w want to change it. Thanks, PB89 |

First of all, what type of speed changes are they? There are two main possibilities: either the recording speeds up and slows, which also raises and lowers the pitch, or else the pitch remains the same and it sounds like the person simply talked faster or slower. Of course, it can be any combination inbetween these two as well. If it's mostly the first then the Effects / Pitch / Bend tool is the right one for the job. This tool acts just like speeding up or slowing down a tape recorder or turntable. If you use it to speed up the sound then the pitch goes up as well. If you use it to lower the pitch then the speed also slows down. For the second case look at Process / Time Stretch. This lets you "rubber band" the speed without changing the pitch. It works well for small amounts of adjustment, but using it a lot can introduce weird tinny or echoing sounds. In either case, you can highlight just portion of the recording you want to work on and the effects will only affect that section. |
