Hi I have a client that has produced a CD that she wants me to edit one of her tracks to place in a flash movie. BTW I have edited music in the past without any problem. She has sent me a wma file via email and this file will not open in sonicfoundry ver.6 because its stating that it has "Digital Right Management Protection". (Remember she owns this music) Is there a way that I can get around this and if not what questions must I ask the producer of this music in order to get an editable music file?

The wma file can be found here http://empoweringlatinas.com/queen.wma
Try it and see if anyone has any luck with it. Since I could not open the wma file I asked her to just send me the CD. I copied the .cda file to my hard drive and the .cda file will not open at all, however it will play just fine off the CD but I can't edit it either.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Fred

I believe she will need to re-encode the file to *.wma AFTER she turns off the "Protect..." in WMP's options then send you that new copy. She must have encoded it using WMP for that to happen. Other apps. such as Sound Forge will not do that.

Another option may be... and I have not done this, is for her to send you the contents of her "license" folder and paste to yours, which I can't tell you where it resides by default because I've long ago moved all personal data directories out of "C:", but that's a long shot.

If you're going to edit it you should try to get the file in a lossless format anyway to prevent further degradation. Sony's *.pca is half the size of a *.wav and is lossless. If she has Sound Forge or Vegas she can encode to *.pca and send it to you.

if you have the audio cd you can extract the audio directly into SF. put the cd in the drive, open SF and go to File -> Extract audio from CD. it's pretty self explanatory from there.

I can't download it or stream it. WMP says "Unknown error".

I can open it and play it (and save it to play it later on) with WMP 9.0, but I first have to migrate a license to do so.

I cannot open it directly in Sound Forge 7.0. (Keeps giving me a "message missing" error.) Might have something to do with the WMA being copy protected.

I was able, as always, to just play the file in WMP and have Sound Forge record it that way. (You might want to tell your client there are ways around these kinds of things.) ;o)

It's simple,
Get your client to send you the CD or the file(s) that the CD or video was made from. Some clients need to be educated. You will look better in advising them to do so.

This peice of advise worked perfectly.

Thank You Very Much.
