Is there a way to open a file to appear in full wave view all the time, not in some preset zoom ratio?

Increase the "Normal zoom ratio" in Options->Preferences->Display to something enormous.

go to Options -> Preferences -> Display tab. then set the Normal Zoom Ratio to something like 1:32.768 (experiment a little). it will now open wave files with the wave data shown from beginning to the end of the track.

EDIT : too late...doh! :)

I tried the above suggestions and it does view the entire wave. I've been accustomed to Cool Edit 2000. It always opens to fill the wave window the entire wave regardless of wave size.

One of the things i've always found is that no matter how i tweak something to my personal tastes, it still ends up being something i don't want a significant portion of the time. I might get annoyed that Sound Forge always opens up at 4096:1 zoom ration 'cause i usually start right off with fine editing at 128:1. But if i change the default to that then i'll find that just as often i'll be annoyed because i need to zoom out to look at something. *shrug* Not a big deal, just a personal observation.

Good point Kelly... I also find that even though I think I can't live without something I'm SO used to, given a little time, I find, in my case, not only was I foolish but thankful I was far better off for being willing to adapt. Every 5 years, I look back at myself, and think, what an idiot! Using that criteria, I'm an idiot right now!

Case in point; The vast majority of my X's!

I recall doing a study on this for my advanced Psych class back in college. I don't remember the exact name of the phenomenon, but basically the thing is that you tend to notice and remember that which you don't like while that which is desirable and pleasant goes by relatively unnoticed. So, if a default does what you want 70% of the time and what you don't want 30% of the time then you'll end up with the impression that the default is wrong most of the time because that 30% is what you remember dealing with.
