Doesn't it do it by itself? I've tried the SF 6 demo, and the non-destructive means that it doesn't harm the original source file. I wouldn't think that would be an 'option' to use.

I believe version 6.0 introduced the concept of non-destructive editing in Sound Forge.

I can't remember offhand if this was possible in earlier versions. Anyone?

4.5 and 5.0 will make a temporary copy of the entire file unless you open in Direct mode. Changes are made to that temporary file in-place and undo information is copied off beforehand. The original is safe until you save. In this sense it is "non-destructive". If you open in Direct mode, Sound Forge operates on the actual file right from the get go.

6.0 and later is truly non-destructive, where the original is used, but processed data is stored in small temporary files rather than the file itself. The underlying architecture provides a map of how these smaller edits are strung together for playback, rendering, or further processing. This makes undos essentially instantaneous and allows for features like undo-past-save and project files, among other things. There is no Direct mode in 6.0 and later.

In the "Open" window (Ctrl+O) highlight the file and UN-check- the box, "Operate directly on the sound file."

It should be mentioned however that once you "Save", the original is over-written and cannot be recovered. So if you are not absolutly sure about any changes you make, use "Save As" which creates a new file with the changes and leaves the original intact.
The latter applies to SF-5 & 6 as well.
