how to archive completed project?

i have a few completed projects that i would like to get off my hard drive. here is what i was planning to doing. let me know if i'm missing anything in case i ever need to go back and re-edit.

1. print the final video to tape. one of the projects is 90 minutes, so how to i do this with 60 minute tapes? maybe print to tape will automatically ask for the next tape.

2. save the .veg, .dar, audio, and image files to cd-r.

3. save the final rendered dvd to a data dvd-r. i should be able to use this to burn additional video dvds if needed.

4. i used capture with scene dectection so i think i can delete my captured .avi files. if i need to recapture, won't vegas prompt do to this using my original .veg file?

anything else i missing or i have wrong above? of course, i'll make a few extra final video dvds.

thanks for helping me free up disk space. i'm sure my defragmenter will run for about a day after this.

It sounds like you've got it covered. The only additional thing I can think of is saving the veg to a new folder and tick the "Copy trimmed media with project" box. This will give you everything you need to restore the project in one folder. BUT, for a 90 minute piece that's a looooot of copying to be made and maaaany backup-DVDs.

thanks. what's the best way to take 95 mins of video and print to 2 tapes?

This is how I've done it in the past:

Easy option: If your edited project has a fade to black anywhere in the main body, print to tape just past that point, then start again on a new tape just before that point. you can recapture the two tapes and it's an easy edit to piece back together at the fade to black.

More work, but just as good option:
1. Divide the file size of your final .avi by 3.5 (we'll say 7 for example)
2. Place the .avi on a new timeline
3. Take the number you just came up with in step one, and evenly space 7 markers on the timeline.
4. Render the regions between the markers as separate .avi files (a.avi, b.avi, c.avi, etc.)
5. Remove the main .avi from the timeline, replacing it with your rerendered files.
6. Save the .veg file as "patch.veg"
7. Burn each .avi as a data DVD.

If you need to redo it, just copy the dvds to your hard drive, open the .veg and tell it where the files are, and there you go.

All these options require a fair amount of work and a fair amount of prayer that everything will recover fine. Fair enough :-)

Another option is to download QuickPar and archive to CDR or DVDR. QuickPar will "chunk" your files to the correct size for your destination. It will also optionally generate redundant files, so if some of your CDRs/DVDRs fail you can still recover everything.

Sure this will take some time, especially popping CDs in and out of your driver. And a few bucks for all those blanks. And you'll need extra space on your HD (double) because you'll need to create the archive files before burning them.

Personally, I use backup software to burn the project to CDR. Cheap and convenient but I don't get the redundancy in case one of the CDs fail.
