Subject:Convert stereo to mono

I am trying to make backing tracks from audio files. I load the file and it is displayed in stereo ( two tracks). I invert the Left channel and you can see the slight change take place on the left wave file.
I next try to convert stereo to Mono using the following method::
1. Right click the Stereo box in the status bar and choose Mono from the shortcut menu or Click the Mono radio button on the Format tab of the Properties dialog and click the OK button. I next click the Mix Channels radio button to place the mono data in the right and left channels. I then click the OK button.
As soon as the OK is clicked the wave file disappears? It will not play but Sound Forge says it's there?? What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Sound Forge 6 build 132

You might want to read up on phase cancellation

Why are you inverting the left channel? It sounds like the audio is already mono if you are inverting the phase and it cancels everything.

Just because you see two channels doesn't mean the audio is stereo.

Doug,

I try to make backing tracks so that I can play lead on my guitar. The purpose of the invert is to try and get rid of the lead on the wave file so I can use it as background to my playing. Your absolutely right with reference to that what I had been trying to change was a Mono file. I tried a number of files and discovered just what you said. Thanks for the reply.

I'm glad you FINALLY figured it out. Especially, after posting 2 threads asking the same question. Why didn't you just ask the question "how do I remove vocals?" That one is a favorite in these forums. As, I mentioned before Sound Forge is doing exactly what you are telling it to do, the problem is obviously you have no clue as to what you are doing. Good luck with that guitar career, you'll need it because Rocket science is definately out of the question.
