I've got a track with just people talking on it, but in the background there is a deep humming, like the mic was faulty or something. I'm very new to Sound Forge and have been trying to remove the background noise using various features without success.

When someone talks on the track, the peaks rise above the hum.

Can anyone recommend specifc features to try ?

Hey Shifty-I hate it when I get ignored on posts, so I'll give it a try. Mind you, I'm a novice myself compared to some of these guys, but maybe some of my mis-information may incite them to join in with better options. I have had marginal success using the spectrum analysis tool to identify what frequencies the unwanted noise is operating at, then used the various eq plugs to try and notch them out. You'll likely alter the properties of the good with the bad, so don't expect miracles. You could also try Sony's noise reduction (not the on board plugin), but I think its an expense you might not justify. I haven't used it myself, but there are a lot of good things said about it here and there in these posts. Good luck!

larryo is correct. I might add the paragraphic (I believe, not at my PC to check) has a 60 Hz hum preset you can try and adjust the center frequency and dB cut.

Also he's correct here about Noise Reduction, if this is a steady noise you could expect the best results from this plug-in.

I'm not experienced like a lot of people on this forum, but I did get the Noise Reduction plug-in. It not only does the noise reduction for the background noise you're describing, but it also does a great job on clicks, pops and other annoying noised with using the click & crackle option. I bought mine through an eductional web site at 1/4 of the cost, so if your a student or teacher, you can get it cheaper that way. The Noise Reduction plug-in is invaluable in my opinion.
