Hey guys I just got sonic foundry 7.0 and i need some help. Once I import a mp3 or wav file, I would like to record some vocals over it. The problem is, when i press record it only records the vocals and doesnt want to play my beat at the same time. If someone could help me it would be great. thank you

SoundForge is like a stereo tape recorder. It can't record and play back at the same time. It will only do one or the other. In order to do what you want with tape recorders, you'd have to have two of them and a mixer. You'd play the original material on one, mix it with the new vocals using the mixer, and then record the combined output on the second tape recorder. SoundForge is similar in that you'd have to play the original material in a separate program (Windows Media Player or even Windows Sound Recorder will do fine). You can use the mixer control panel for your sound card to do the mixing, then record the result in SoundForge.

If you want to do a lot of this sort of thing then a multitrack program would suit you better. Take a look at SONY's Vegas software.

Addendum: Many consumer sound cards only allow you to select one source at a time, ie: Mic, Line, Output, CD, ect. (Options>Preferences>Recording)
So you may need an external mixer, or better yet, a muti-track application.

Another not-so-good work-around: Monitor the playback of your original track and record the vocal. Copy the vocal track and use Edit>Paste Special>Mix. to add it to the original track..................... or better yet, get a muti-track application.

Vegas is one of the industry's finest multitrack audio editors.

Oh, and yes, it just happens to handle video too.
