I'm not a very experienced sound forge user, working in vegas I have some wedding audio I am trying to extract somthing decent out of. both audio tracks are from camcorder mics, minister didnot have a mic. (long story but I ended up taping the wedding with only 5 min's notice. using a consumer cam. ) One of my audio tracks has alot of noise from a waterfall/fountain. working on that one.. I also have the audio/video of the service from a friends camera as well , the audio is somewhat better but i hear a frequent "pop" almost like his lens cap hitting the cam or somthing. question: if I open it up in sound forge( version 4.5, old I know) I can see the regular audio is peak levels are only around -10.5db , the pops peak at -0.9db. is there a way to cut all sound that exceeds say -11. db not touching the audio below that level? like a noise gate, sorry if this seems elementary, but i think i been messing with it so much I've cornfused myself. |

I don't remember what's included in 4.5 but did you try zooming in on the pop/s > highlight from the start to end of the pop > Tools > replace. or if that's not available, right click on the highlighted area > cut? MJ |

Thanks for the reply MJ, yeah thats pretty much what i ended up doing all day yesterday was cutting those peaks and small ocilations after. I have to sync it back with the video today I'm hoping that the overall change in length will be minute so as not to affect the sync toward the end, if so a little time stretch should fix me. Thanks again. |

Instead of "cutting" or deleting the offending pops, it would be better to reduce their volume. This will eliminate the "sync" problem if you remove alot of time. The time would remain unchanges and the sync would be right on. |

this may be a stupid question but I'm not sure I know how to reduce the volume of just that selected section of the waveform. |

Process > Volume. The problem here is that if the pop is only a pop you will at best have pop at a lower volume or at worst blank spots that will be just as obvious as a pop if not more. Vegas is great at time stretching in the increments I'd assume you will have to here. I don't remember if 4.5 has "Find" which is mute at this point since you post you have already gone thought he entire file but Find "may" have made it much easier to move to each "pop" and edit. Tools > Replace would have been the best method as it uses samples prior and post selection to fill in the selection. MJ |

You could try using a compressor and set the Threshold to -10 dB with a high compression ratio of 10:1. Make the Attack 1mS and the release 10mS. This should reduce the volume of the clicks you're hearing without affecting the majority of the audio. The other thing you can do is zoom in on the clicks and use the pencil tool to draw them out. |

Find the pop and edit the waveform. You can move the single point on the wave (you must really zoom in) manually, or you can have sound forge automatically calculate the corrected point. This will not impact your time. Actually amazingly easy to do once you've done it once or twice. BTW, I just learned this at a sound forge demo. |

A mechanical/accoustical type "pop" noise may be too large to "pencil" out effectivly. I don't remember if 4.5 had the "Repair" process.. If it does not, You could copy some room- tone or something next to the offending noise, High-lite the offending "pop", Right-click and select "Overwrite". This way, you would not lose sync, since it only replaces the selected frames. (or samples in our case) It may be too late now anyway, Good luck. |
