I'm in a rock band. We recorded a record with Ron St. Germain (311, Creed, Soundgarden, others) and had it mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk in New York (he did Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins, tons of others). I recently ripped our CD and opened the WAV files in Sound Forge and they are SUPER DUPER HOT. It looks like they're clipping in fact. I looked at a certain subsection and the highest value was -2.02 DB but I'll be darned if the curve isn't flat as can be. the whole file looks SQUARE. It also sounds MUCH LOUDER than anything i've been saving on my machine. Can anyone explain to me how to get that kind of compression without things sounding terrible? |

Part of me wants to say "Why?" ;) Another part of me wants to say "Media levels are irrelevant. Turn up the volume when you play it back." But then the wild and crazy part of me says "Have you tried wave hammer?" |
