Subject:firewire 410 setup with SF for recording VO

I'm having problems setting up the m-audio Firewire 410 with a Fujitsu notebook for recording in SF7.
Here's what I've done:
1) installed drivers before hooking up 410
2) hooked 410 up via 6pin firewire to 1394 cardbus, but still need wallwart for 410 to work--Normal for laptop setup??? I thought six pin got you power
3) assigned Firewire 410 in all SF option menus
4) attached AKG C100S via XLR to 1/2 analog in and set 410 menu to get signal -- I get little green line indicators
5) I press ctrl-R, assign record details, guestimate levels, then try to record. I get crackly distorted, yet too quiet input. REDO
6) I press ctrl-R, toggle DC adjust ON and RECORD. I get good, yet less than full signal audio.
My guess is that the m-audio firewire 410 is working, but not the way it should because I haven't set something up right.

Can anybody who has successfully set this beast up to record mono VO and monitor stereo with SF7 help me not abuse this new tool any further?

thanks,

bt

I've only used the 410 with Veags. No problems but you should make certain you have latest drivers from M-Audio. I do kind of feel mic gain is a bit lower than I'd like and I'm using Rhode NT1a which is pretty sensitive.
Are you running ASIO BTW?
Also make certain on HW page of 410 Sync is set to internal.

thanks farss,

just installed newest 410 driver I could find on m-audio site-- Feb2004? and all the sudden I don't need to use the DCadjust to get firewire 410 to record thru SF nicely. Also seems to be playing nicely with V5a. Here are how my preferences are set in V5a right now:
Audio Device
M-Audio FW ASIO
Default stereo and front playback device Analog Out 1/2 FW410(1)
Default rear playback device Analog Out 1/2 FW410(1)
Default center and LFE playback device Analog Out 1/2 FW410(1)
Default audio recording device Analog In 1 FW410 (1)/Analog
X Automatically detect and offset for hardware recording latency
********
Fujitsu laptop, 3G, 512RAM, 800FSB

In Vegas5a, any magic adjustments from these?

ALSO-- is it cool to enable the FW410 on the MIDI panel if you aren't yet

MIDIing?
thanks,

bt

Yes, you can turn on MIDI on the FW even if you aren't connected to MIDI devices. Nothing happens, because there is no signal. But all you are doing is telling Forge or Vegas to look for incoming signal. No performance hit at all when nothing is incoming.
