I got this months EQ Magazine, and within an article it says Adobe is releasing a v2.5 version of Audition, formerly Cool Edit Pro. New features they're advertising is the ability to remove vocals....and even more impressive, the opposite of being able to make an acapela...keeping the vocal and removing the music. Hmmmmm.....sounds interesting? This I've got to see to believe.

they probably have an optmized filter preset that is supposed to magically remove either the vocal or the music. indeed, i'd have to see it and hear it before i'm a believer. :)

All Major label Record Companies SHOULD MAKE KARAOKE TRACKS AVAILABLE OF ALL SONGS BY ALBUM!!!

It would be relatively easy at mix time, I do it for my clients all the time. Takes an extra 1/2 hour. If Record Execs read these forums they would have jumped on it years ago!

What would be their motivation? How many copies would they sell? How many sales of the full mix would they lose to people creating remixes? Would the artists have any interest?

The thing is a lot of hip hop/dance artist have already been doing this for years. One reason they do it, is because in most cases they don't perform the music live, so they make an instrumental to perform to. Another thing they do is release seperate single releases with instrumental and acapella versions, especially on Vinyl. The reason for this, is that DJ's in clubs can take the instrumental or acapella and do live remixes with other singles with the same. So besides Karaoke, there are other markets they reach in sales.

Ya but in the professional realm this brings on huge copyright issues.

If the labels were to release backing tracks they would have to include licensing fees to the artists more than likely making it cost prohibitive to consumers interested in this.

Even karaoke CDs are illegal to use for pro situations of course and those that use them for less than pro purposes are still subject to a law suit.

That said, even anyone that uses "vocal removed" tracks and makes a buck on that is also liable.
