I've been asking and reading up here on the components for a budget recording system. Both for VO at PC and street interviews. Here is what I have come up. It is a complete system for $310. I am asking for critism/reviews before I buy. Microphone: Behringer B-2 pro. This is a large diaphram condenser mic that is a clone of the Neuman U-87 $150 Pre-Amp: Behringer Tube Ultra MIC-200. Includes Phantom power. $60 Sound Card: M-Audio Audiophile 2496. PCI digital Stereo card. $100 So what do you think? |

Do you have a laptop or desktop? Either way, that will work for VOs, but would be cumbersome for on-the-go street interviews, a portable minidisc, DAT or other with a reporter's omni handheld mic would better suited for that. - The B2 looks like a U-87. That's about as far as it goes (I prefer solid state mic pre.s and mics for most VOs and narration. But that's subjective.) |

Thanks and I am at a PC. The interview will have mic connected to camera like PD170. Someone here told me there are many chinese U-87 clones and that this B2 was one of them. You obviously disagree. What solid states do YOU recommend. I am getting a lot of conflicting advice, but I'm happy to sort through it all. thanks again, Mike |

As for the "clones" they go for $200-$300 (or less). A Neumann U-87 goes for $2000-$3000.. Do you really think there going to sound the same? I'm sure the B2 sounds good for the price. It depends on your budget. As for on the street interviews, on-camera is a whole other game. You could put a lav on somone or get real close and use a camera mounted shotgun. Hire a pro soundperson for important stuff. There are lots of great sounding tube and SState pre.s avaiable. Go to a pro-audio dealer and try thrm out. |

I'm new to this so that is why I am asking questions. I only just discovered I need a pre AND a mixer/converter - I was told here that the Behringer B2 sounded like the Neuman. If Neuman's design has been copied faithfully it should. When you pay $3000 for a great mike like that you are still only paying about $200 for the cost of making it, the rest is for the research and development over years. If someone else steals that technology then they can make good realistic clones. The Behringer website hidding behind what might be a fake review actually says the B2 is indistinguishable in sound from the Neuman! With the camera I economise by using this VO mic as a boom or handheld - many say they use ldcc's for this. Anyway I think I will go with the Studio Projects B3 and the VTB-1 as suggested above. Still want help on an Audio Interface - Echo MiaMidi or USB or Firewire? |

The MiaMIDI's 1/4" TRS I/O is great, so you can't go wrong with that. You could go directly out from the VTB-1 (which also features 1/4" TRS output) into the MiaMIDI... Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid mD's ACIDplanet Page Guitars 4 Kids |
