when i try to open an divx file, only the picture will be found on the timeline, but it got black. i looked on g-spot what codecs the file have. it says two are competablie. which mp3 audio codec do i have to install so i can load the divx file with audio?

video: DivX 4 (OpenDivX)
audio: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3

video codecs i installed on my computer:
The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:
--> {DivX Pro(tm) 5.1.1 Codec}
--> {Moonlight NicePheratu}
--> {DivX Decoder Filter}
--> {DivX Decoder Filter}
{XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder}
audio codecs i installed on my computer:
The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:
--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)}
--> {Moonlight Odio Dekoda}
--> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}

also, do you think it would be better to convert the mpeg into DV avi for editing? to edit an mpeg is a kind o slow...

You should be able to use that file on the timeline with the codecs you already have. Maybe your Mp3 codec in Vegas is not registered?

Vegas is first and foremost a DV AVI editor so yes, it's better to work with avi's on the timeline.

no, the mp3 codec is registered. must be something else...
but i still have another problem, i can't click the custom tab on the MPEG2 render. i only can use the templates, is this normal?
maybe i should uninstall all audio and video codecs? then try step by step...

It is normal if you have not registered the mpeg encoder within Vegas. Upon registration the custom button will be unlocked. However, some people on this forum have had problems with this although they've registered. If I remember correctly it's an issue with the system registry. Please do a search here on the forum to find the fix for this. It will probably solve your mp3 problem too.

I've had success with ffdshow. Read this thread. There are no other divx/xvid codecs installed on my system.
Especially installing entire codec packs (Nimo for example) is asking for trouble, in my opinion.

btw, is there any option how to rest the windows avi format?
because my .avi files do not look as normal, so other player made them default in between then I had "open with" choosing wmp
