Does anyone know a way to import the ID3 tag information into Sound Forge when opening an MP3 file with ID3 tag info? I find this a bit annoying and have submitted it to Sony as a feature request, just wondering if anyone has a work around. I have recently purchased a few portable .MP3 players that use different media. A Rio which uses SDD media cards(256Meg), multiple CD players that read CDrom MP3 files (700Meg), a DVD player that reads DVDrom MP3 files (4.2 Gig) and an RCA Lyra portable HD player (20Gig). So obviously my devices have a wide variety of storage capabilities. I have over 300 music CD's and have recently ripped and saved to 192Kbs MP3 files my favorite songs off most of these CDs using Sound Forge. So for the smaller storage devices like the Rio, I would like to save a lot of these files at 128Kbs to further reduce the size and put more songs onto the Rio. The problem is, I already saved the files once with the ID3 tag information, but when I go to reopen them in Sound Forge and resave them, I lose the previous saved MP3 information and have to go refind this info and retype it. I don't think it's practical saving 2000 presets so I can easily recall this information. Anyone else run into this problem with a possible work around? |

I have experienced this problem and honestly I was not as prudent as you were. I did not bother to mention anything to SONY / SOUND FORGE, just because I dont think they actually care. What I have done - is the following I name the file with the pertinent ID3 information, then I tell my MP3 manager to recreate all tags based on file name. For example: SHERLOCK HOLMES - A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA - TRACK (01) - CD (01) The information will automatically be written into the ID3 tag, and also if I burn a CD using Nero, the CD TEXT will automatically be generated. All of this by the way, reside elegantly in WAVELAB 5.0, hence mp3 handling is a breeze. But in SF7, somehow MP3 stuff, is not relevant therefore an obvious issue has gone without proper treatment. -- EDIT -- I use MusicMatch (latest version), and MP3 Collector. Furthermore since Steinberg has built in Batch Processing and Tagging, I have been using a combination of both Wavelab and Sound Forge. |

Thanks for the info. I was just using Sonic Foundry's batch converter 5.0b to save some time converting MP3 encoding settings, but this has the same problem too, it looks like I can import all the songs and do my file conversion pretty easily using Batch Converter. The problem is, it looks like I get to name multiple files with the same ID3 tag....Now why the hell would I ever want to name all the songs with the same ID3 tag? Afterall they are different songs. "I use MusicMatch (latest version)" That figures, I just installed MusicMatch, because my Lyra Player supports Music Match Playlist files. Well after installing it, I found out that Windows Media player can create the same type of playlist files so I just went ahead and uninstalled MusicMatch and used WMP. Can you write the ID3 tag information to the .MP3 file using Musicmatch without having to go through a reencode? |

Music Match is able to write the ID3 tag, from the file name, without having to re-encode, furthermore there are some handy batch conversion options available as well. Music Match can do batch conversions, batch rename and rename file based on ID3 tag information. Yes -- ID3 Tagging is possible without any encoding, furthermore you can set up Music Match to automatically recognize naming schemes, based on some delimeters such as dashes, commas and spaces. It is a popular program no made for heavy duty work, but it is a fine mp3 manager. I use it to manage all my audio stuff, sound effects, samples, and finalized recordings. Also MusicMatch is some nice file creation aspects, such as spawning cd's, audio, mp3, and mixed file type cd's. It was a worthy investment. After all of my work in SF7, I then mix down to the compatible 44.1/16 bit and use the mp3 batching schemes in Music Match. - Hope that helps - Kevin |
