Is there a sound-quality advantage to taking a 44.1 CD track or a 48 DV track and upsampling them to 96 in SF or Vegas while applying effects or filters, then downsampling them "back" to 48khz for output? |

I believe a higher bit-depth (like 24-bit) will yield better results than using a higher sample rate. (Acoustic material will yield more benefits overall.) There's that whole Nyquist theory thing too. In order to accurately reproduce a frequency of about 20 kHz (which is about the upper range limit of human hearing), the sample rate used should be double that. So 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz is usually fine. Anyone else like to add anything to this meek musician's understanding of it all? If all the effects are being applied in the one chain then as I understand it the Vegas /SF pipeline runs in floating point so there's no advantage at all. However if you're going to render out to an intermediate file then there would be a potentialy significant plus. Bob. |
