i searched the site and saw that other people were having problems with Direct X but never found the solution to this kind of problem. i recently uninstalled my registered version of 5.0 XP and installed the 7.0 trial. i wanted to try out a particular direct x plug-in, but the DX Favorites drop-down menu is NOT THERE! it just skips from Tools to Options. i am running XP pro. i un-installed and re-installed with no luck. also, when i click on View > Plug-In Manager, SoundForge just closes completely. and, when i click on Plug-In Chainer, the Plug-In Chainer window pops up, but the window is blank (grayed out) except for the combo box that says "Untilted" and the top row of buttons (Bypass, Preview, Process Selection, etc.). there is nothing else in the window below these items. does anyone have any ideas about this kind of problem. i sure don't want to buy the registered version if i can't even get the trial working. i'm wondering if there could have been something left behind from the 5.0 removal that is preventing this from working? can someone tell me how to completely remove a previous installation? thanks in advance, rastaman |

Make sure you do not install 7.0 into a "Sonic Foundry" folder or vice versa. Other than that, it should be fine as long as you went through the uninstall routine. Try uninstalling everything. Restart your system, delete any folder residue—that is, any Sonic Foundry or Sony folders left behind on your drive after you uninstalled. Then try installing just the 7.0 demo. i tried uninstalling all sony and soundforge applications, deleting all folders and registry keys. restarted the computer and reinstalled the demo and still have the same problem. no dx favorites menu, plug-in chainer window is blank except for the top portion of the window. and, when i click on plug-in manager, soundforge just closes. so, i'm guessing there must be something wrong with my computer or something else is comficting with these features. everything else seems to be working fine in soundforge, and every other application on my system for that matter. so, if anyone has any other suggestions, i'd greatly appreciate it. rastaman |

Sounds like either the plug-ins are not registered or you have another .dll that is breaking grovel. 1) find sfppack*.dll in the sony\shared folder and drag&drop them onto an open instance of Sound Forge (click Yes to register). Then restart. 2) If they still aren't there, on restart you should have briefly see a little "Scanning for audio plug-ins" window. If something in there pukes before it gets to those sfppack*.dll modules, this would point to a screwy not-really-a-plug-in .dll getting scanned by the MS filter mapper. A third party tool like AnalogX DXMan will help you track down the misbehaving .dll. J. |

sonic, i tried dragging and registering plug-ins, and it seemed like all went ok, but there is still no DX Favorites menu. the menus at the top just skip from Tools to Options. i think the fact that the plug-in chainer and plug-in manager aren't working either points to a problem elsewhere. so, should the DX Favorites, Plug-In Chainer and Plug-In Manager all work with the trial version? if so, then i have a feeling that i would have the same problem if i purchased the licensed version. which i would do if i knew it would work with my system. i noticed in the help files that it says "The DX Favorites menu is available only in the full version of Sound Forge." isn't the trial version the Full Version? i thought the Audio Studio version would be considered the basic version and Sound Forge to be the Full version. thanks again for your help, rastaman |

Demo or not, if the splash screen or About box says "Sound Forge Audio Studio", you are running the Audio Studio product and there will be no DX Favorites menu. If you are running the full version (with the red splash screen), there is another issue. J. |

Sonic, i didn't mean to mislead you... i'm not running Audio Studio. I downloaded the trial version of Sound Forge 7.0 from this page: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=461 when i start the program it has the red splash screen and the about box says "Sony Sound Forge 7.0 Version 7.0b (Build 3.01)" so, do you have any other ideas as to why the DX Favorites menu is missing? maybe something with Microsoft Direct X or XP or Windows updates. i don't know, but it's sure frustrating. thanks again for your efforts, p.s. just found this while searching the web, so i guess this used to be a problem with previous versions. however, the fact that it is still happening in 7.0 is a bit troubling: Notable changes/fixes in version 6.0a A problem that prevented the DX Favorites menu from displaying on some systems running Windows XP has been fixed. rastaman |

Never heard of this before. What version of DirectX are you running? Also, you can try holding down Ctrl+Shift while launching, which will reset the internal preferences. |

I found the way to fix this problem (it's my problem too) 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regedt32 and then click OK. 3. Browse to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sony Media Software 4. On the Edit menu, click Permissions. 5. Click the entry for the user that is currently logged on, and then verify that Read and Full Control are both set to Allow. 6. Click the Advanced button, verify that the user that is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permission column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. 7. Click to clear the Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box 8. Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box 9. Click Apply , and then click Yes when you receive the prompt to continue. 10. Click OK twice. 11. On the Registry menu, click Exit and the problem gone :) |
