Subject:Automatible Pan and Mono Files bug

Details:
Mono Wav. or .MP3 file. Sound Forge 7.0. Add the Sony "Pan" into the plugin chainer. Select to automate the parameters. Everything seems to function fine in the GUI, but no panning actually happens. Even if you process the mono file through the plugin chainer window, it spends time processing, but you end up with the same file you started with, when it completes.

psst...Red...it's mono. No left. No right. No stereo. ;o)

Seriously, I thought it was a bug too at first, but then I thought, Wait a minute. I'm working with mono.

Straight from Sound Forge's online help:

Panning envelopes will have no effect on mono source data. Convert mono sound data to stereo before adding a panning envelope.

You can't Pan a mono source file? Hmmmmm? That's a bit odd. Well thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I guess I won't expect this one to get fixed.

I think this is a quirk in the way the plugin chainer works.

Basically, the input file parameters and the output file parameters are the same when you process a file with the plugin chainer. Hence, you cannot pan a mono file.

A similar thing happens when you dither with the pluging chainer. For example, if you have a 24bit file that you apply dither/noise shaping to inside of a plugin chain, you end up with a 24bit file the dither instead of a 16 bit file that has been dithered.

Quirk? If you want to call it that, I suppose.

The plug-in chainer is designed to process selections as well as entire files. As such, it does not allow any format conversions.

Yeah, I wouldn't really call it a quirk. I was just expecting it to function more like it does in Vegas with Mono files though or at least function the same as it does when you use the DX Favorites menu. I tried out Kelly Industries "Pan Handler" since this is available through the plugin chainer and the DX favorites menu and this functions similar in SF as the Sony automated Pan. Except the Pan handler meters actually show the mono source file is actually being Panned in it's output Peak Meters in the plugin chainer, but this doesn't correlate with what you are hearing and what the SF meters are displaying and when you decide to process the audio it does nothing. In contrast if you use the same effect on the same selection using Pan Handler, it works totally different than how the chainer handles it versus how the DX favorites handles it, thus you get two different results selecting the same data, using the same plugin. This is the same thing like using a Waves Truverb Plugin or any other stereo reverb, which allows you to select MONO>MONO destination, or MONO>STEREO destination.
