My son recently change some of the settings and now when I want to record (into the microphone) but the only thing being recorded is the sound form the track that is playing. Does anyone know what settings I need to change to have the recorded sounds (vocals) to come from the microphone?

2. In Windows: Double-click the Windows speaker icon. Select Options>Properties>Recording. Under Show the following volume controls, check mark the box for Microphone. Click OK. Adjust the volume control for optimal record levels while viewing the Sound Forge record window meter.

- The "Options>Properties>Recording" volume fader, controls the audio level going to Sound Forge (or other recording software.- The "Options>Properties>Playback" volume fader, controls the source or playback audio level going to the speakers.
Layout may vary slightly for different soundcards

In Sound Forge, goto OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>WAVE.

There are 2 drop down boxes for Playback, and Recording. These should list the available sound card drivers to choose. Also when you open up the Record window, there is a "Device" drop down box to choose to select the record device. Same for playback device if you go to OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>TOOLBARS and then check "play device" and this will expose a drop down selection box in Sound Forge.

Do what rraud recommended though. These preferences that I mentioned only allow you to select the device. rraud's advice allows you to select the particular input on that device that is to be used. It sounds like somehow this got changed to "mix" or "record what you hear", and you need to disable that and enable the mic input.
