So... from a rookie to this product line... Can Sound Forge be used to edit (cu/ttrim, etc) MP3 clips?

Yes it can. However, it will decompress and then recompress the file so you'll lose some quality.

I guess I could always decompress , then save the new clips as wave files to give better quality?

Well, the decompressed versions won't sound any better than the current MP3 files. It's the compression step that loses quality, and you've already got them compressed. By saving them as WAV files you just won't lose any more quality. But once it's gone, you can't get it back.
