I know, I know Sound Forge is a great editor but my partner recently picked up Wavelab as he feels it is also a great editing program. The problem is now I get no VU meters in SF. Any Clues???

Hmmmm? Very Strange. Maybe a Wavelab conspiracy? Next I woulddo the obvious then, and do an uninstall/reinstall of Sound Forge if you haven't tried that already.

"should I try to remove and reinstall completely?? "

That's what I thought I said the first time. I mean what can it hurt? It's already broken right? If you think it's related to Wavelab after an uninstall/reinstall process, then try uninstalling Wavelab to see what happens.
