Subject:Metering discrepancy

I'm using SF7 and the record meters are acting weird. When I record a signal in, the SF record meters will never indicate clipping, no matter how hot of a signal I send. When I stop recording and look at the wav file, it is clearly clipped, and at a lower level than I would expect.

I suspect my sound card is the culprit. It is the SoundMax integrated audio from Dell. I am going to replace it, but wondered if there is a recommended sound card that sounds good, and allows accurate metering in SF.

I don't have a huge budget, I have at least 2 PCs I have to upgrade and would like to stay around $100 each if possible. Thanks in advance.

The SoundMax is indeed unsuitable for most tasks, but should still behave predictably.

Make sure the DC Offset control is disabled or appropriately calibrated. Also check the Windows control panel settings.

Echo, RME, Lynx, and M-Audio are all common choices for third-party cards, though they may be a little out of your price range.
