Well, I have to say I was caught in a pinch and ended up downloading Audition v1.5 to try out it's vocal extraction feature because everything I attempted in Forge and Vegas just wasn't getting the job done. A friend of mine passed away this last week who was only 31 years old. He was a singer in a popular local Detroit band. The rest of the band and many other local bands are putting a benefit show on this Friday, to help the family pay for the funeral costs. Well the rest of the band contacted me because they wanted me to make an acapella edit for them for one of the songs, so they could play along with his lyrics on stage. They called me and said, we got his vocal tracks on DAT tape, can you work with that? I said no problem, I have a DAT player, I can lay it off to my PC and do whatever we need to it. Well when they arrived at my studio that DAT tape unfortunately turned out to be an "ADAT" tape........and I have no ADATs, but I do have a DA-88. Major pickel I was stuck in. I called most of my friends who owned Adats in the past and everyone of them has sold them off. This brings me to my original discussion. I ended up downloading the trial version of Audition. I was able to, in this particular mix to completely remove the vocals uising vocal removal techniques in Sound Forge. So I was hoping, this would give Audition's vocal extract feature a good shot at doing it's thing. I have to admit, I was highly impressed with this feature. It reminded me a lot like how Sony's noise reduction works. And like noise reduction it didn't give me perfect results, but it gave me the flexibility to get the best results that I could get with a little parameter adjustment after starting withn their "Acapella" preset. I ended up with something that could at least be used for the live show, where they'll be playing live instruments along with it so it will hide a lot of the nuances of what was left over in the vocal extract. I now at least have something to fall back on, today I'm going to see if I can locate an Adat......because I am a perfectionist, and not having the best quality will drive me nuts, especially since I know everyone at the show will obviously be focusing their attention on his vocals. Well, I got the job done properly. I went to the recording studio I use to do session work and taught classes at. They have Adats, and are using Paris and Pro Tools on the MAC. We did a digital transfer from the Adats directly into Paris. Then in Paris I saved each track as a seperate mono wave file, and burned it onto CDrom using Adaptecs Toast. This worked out beautifully. I was able to directly import each track into Vegas putting them back in perfect sync. The only problem was that I ran into a major bug in Vegas. Two of the Adat tracks, where actually a Stereo pair guitar recording. So in Vegas I wanted to make them a stereo pair, so I placed them on seperate Vegas tracks and panned one hard left and the other hard right. I tried to then render them as a stereo Wav file within Vegas and kept getting no data in the render, although I was hearing them ok, upon normal playback. So I searched around in Vegas for quite awhile trying to find something that might be muted. Everything was fine. I created a new project and imported them again, and still got the same results. Come to find out, there's a bug in Vegas v5.0d when using my dual Echo Gina cards, and if I have buses setup in the mixer section routed to both cards, then this problem occurs. So after a couple hours of trouble shooting I figured it all out, and just deleted the buses assigned to my second Gina card and then everything worked properly. I guess I'm not suppose to use a dual sound card setup in Vegas any longer if I plan on rendering inside the box? I ended up missing the funeral services.......Thank you Sony for the added video features for the 5.0d update. Message last edited on4/7/2005 11:32:52 AM byRednroll. |
