Q about the new preview feature…

The VGA/DVI preview on a second monitor seems to be working great. (Glad to get rid of the latency involved in the DV->Analog conversion, and it also seems to be lighter on the CPU.)

But what I’d really like to do is to use a Matrox P750 or Parphelia with dual monitors and TV-out for the preview. Anyone know if that is possible?

If the answer is yes, what resolutions are possible on the monitors?

I use the tv out on the Matrox for quick looks at preview to media player which is "S-Video" with V5 by switching to a different position on the A/V switcher from the firewire output. The quality is not that good but in V6 the output would be analog which would be about 1280 resolution with my card. Since I want to use this output for HD another video card is in the works that will handle 1920.

This is exactly how I monitor. I use a 27" NTSC S-video feed from a dual head Nvidia card. The quality is fabulous but the frame rate problems are still the same as using preview on the computer screen. I find that if I set the resolution for the ntsc monitor as low as possible (640 x 480), it helps and I still get a great image as long as I don't have too many video tracks/effects etc.

I echoed your concerns in a different post regarding performance of real time preview. I too wish that I could get smooth previews with effects enabled, multiple compositing tracks, etc. For now, I have gotten used to making editing decisions with effects disabled to get the best frame rates.

Also, the scopes kill performance if you have them set to update while playing.

I've ordered a P750 which should arrive monday.
I'll report back next week when I've tested with TV-out running alongside two new Dell 20" widescreen TFT's @ 1680x1050.
