Subject:SF8: memory leak causes crash – minor support rant

Here is another way to crash SF8 without recovery due to a memory leak.

To reproduce:

* Open task manager and select the performance tab
* Loop a section of a wav file
* View spectrum analysis (single line graph, the larger the FFT size the faster the leak)
* Enable monitor output on spectrum display
* Start playing looped section.

Watch task manager page file usage go up till SF8 exits or is killed by XP

When restarting SF8 an error message displays indicating that it can not recover the auto save.

I did contact support with this and after awhile I got a response from a real person. I’m a little bothered though that the response asked me for information I already supplied. The e-mail I got requested the steps to repro the problem (in the original ticket), my SF8 s/n (which I cut and pasted from the Sony “My Software” page) and my hardware information which I had filled out when Peter asked us to. It seems the left and right hands don’t get it.

Looking forward to the next release…

Larry

Thanks for the report. We have added the problem to our database.

In the meantime, if this is holding you up and you are familiar with Sound Forge's internal preferences, you can set "Use SSE2 optimizations when available" to FALSE to alleviate this problem.
