Subject:"NOISE" ON REC MONITOR

I have Audio Studio. When clicking record and monitoring the signal meter, there appears to be a "phantom" signal to about -92db when there is NO HOT SIGNAL active from spidf in. This kills my headroom. Clipping occurs frequently. I cannot set my gain to optimum level or apply effects without clipping. I have been told by SF tech support that this is "noise from your system". What is it picking up? the PC fans? Harddrive noise? Remember, this is BEFORE I apply a hot signal or do any rendering. This did not occur in my previous version of SF.

What you are seeing is the noise from your soundcard input circuitry. Maybe your meter scale previously didn't go down to -92.

But how a noise level of -92dB could be somehow "killing your headroom" baffles me. Are you setting your inoput level correctly ?

A noise floor of -92dB is more than acceptable and has absolutly nothing to do with your clipping issues. As Geoff said, maybe our meter resolution changed. Should you wish to adjust it, "right-click" the meter and select a different scale. This will not change levels or anything else.
Does the clipping happen on S/PDIF in or analog in? If it happens on the analog in, you will need to lower the source volume before the soundcard or with the soundcard's input gain adj.

Odd that you're getting noise on your S/PDIF input; mine always reads "-Inf." before it detects an incoming signal. Sounds like you have interference of some sort. Bad cable? What's your sound card?

Thanks for the reply, people. I found an email from M-Audio. It has something to do with muting inputs that are not in use. I use a FIREWIRE AUDIOPHILE. I will also, change out my spidif cable and see if that helps. The symptoms are such that when I set my channel gains on my mixer to 12 oclock, if effects are added to the mix, clipping occurs frequently. I could nudge down the gain, I suppose, but this was not necessary previously. Thanks for the suggestions.
