OT (?) Dual Layer DVD

I'm not sure where to post this question, but here seems as relevant as any...

Some players, when playing dual-layer DVDs, will pause for a split second during the transfer between the first and second layer during playback. As DVDA 2 doesn't support dual-layer DVDs, I'm using Nero to master the DVD. NOw, to the question...

Is it possible to define which information is on which layer? Specifially, is it possible to make sure the main feature spans across one layer only so that there's no stutter during its playback?

yes you can do that with authoring applications that support dual layer - you can set the layer break point

Hmm, I think I've found the answer. In DVDA2 the menu tree is actually the order in which the files are burnt to the DVD - this means, with a little experimentation if your main features quite long, you can define quite easily what does or doesn't straddle two layers. Result!

It's a wee bit more complicated than that. First off, DVDA2 won't burn DL and even then, the project tree is probably not a representation of how things get burtn to the DVD except for maybe the simplest projects; second the issue is complicated by the fact that the requirements for burned DL are that you have about the same amount of material on each layer, so it's not simply a matter of going to 4.37GB (or so) and then assuming that the layer switch is going to happen - it won't. a 6GB project will get 3GB per layer.

In addition, there are some other rules about where a layer switch can actually happen which impact this.

I've used CopyToDVD to do DL burning and it seems to do pretty good creating seamless layer switches. DVDA3 has some abilities in this area and will even make suggestions about how to do your project in order to have a good layer switch, but as I've not upgraded yet, I can't comment on how good it is or isn't.
