Surround Sound Synch Problem

Veggie_Dave wrote on 8/20/2005, 6:21 AM
I've just upgraded my XP box to 5.1 with a Creative Live card that I used faultessly on my 2000 box that ran both Vegas 4 and 5.

For some reason it simply refuses to work properly with Vegas 5 on my XP box. I have exactly the same problem as in this thread except this solution doesn't work. It will allow the synch to rectify itself if set to the lowest acceleration but I then lose the 5.1 anyway.

Any help gratefully received...

Did you download the latest Creative Live drivers from Creative Labs or did you just use the ones that come with Windows XP? (or did you use the old ones from Win2K?) Anyway, I would make sure you have the latest drivers for your soundcard for XP direct from Creative. The SBLive Card doesn’t support ASIO drivers so latency will be an issue. Drivers for Win2K and XP are different so this could be why it worked on one OS and not the other.

You might consider upgrading your sound card. The least expensive option (staying away from Creative) would be the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 or 7.1 ($99 & $120USD). That’s still considered a consumer game card but I believe the quality and drivers are better than anything Creative has. (at least it supports ASIO 2) Otherwise it gets more expensive to do surround with a pro card because you need at least 6 outputs like an Echo Gina 3G or M-Audio FW410 (~$350USD).

I was hoping not to need another card, but I guess that may be the only option as the card is already running the latest drivers.

Well... there is no reason why it can’t support ASIO other than the fact that Creative refuses to write an ASIO driver for it because they want you to upgrade to their Audigy cards which do support ASIO.

If you really don’t want to spend any money on a new card, you could try a 3rd party driver for your SBLive card. ASIO4ALL is one such driver which is easy to install and configure. I don’t remember if it supports 5.1 Surround. There is also the KX Project that has an excellent driver for the SBLive. This one definitely supports 5.1.

These are worth checking out before you spend more money on a new card but they are not supported in any way by Creative so you are on your own.
