I'm experiencing lots of crashes and lockups unfortunately. This is with the demo. It's pretty frustrating really! No time to go into repro steps right now, but hopefully will do soon. Meanwhile here's a dump from one of my many crashes (one of the few that's given me an exception rather than just a hung SF with screen going white): Sony Sound Forge 8.0 Version 8.0b (Build 110) Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x30 IP:0x100062D0 In Module 'forgek.dll' at Address 0x10000000 + 0x62D0 Thread: GUI ID=0x122C Stack=0x12E000-0x130000 Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=001b EIP=100062d0 EFLGS=00010246 EBX=00216db0 SS=0023 ESP=0012e1f0 EBP=00000000 ECX=0012e250 DS=0023 ESI=00000000 FS=003b EDX=00000000 ES=0023 EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 100062D0: 8B 4E 30 85 C9 74 09 E8 .N0..t.. 100062D8: 44 89 00 00 8B E8 EB 02 D....... Ideas ? Send it to Tech Support ? FWIW I have not had any crashes with 8b, which could indicate some incompatibility with your OS setup (given all the modules mentioned in the dump), drivers or another app. geoff |

Was it really worth you replying Geoff? Your reply was patronising and unhelpful. I think I know how to run my DAW, but thanks anyway (if you bothered to check my user history you'll see I've been here for even longer than you have). Much of the time successfully using SoFo/Sony software. Oh, and using Sound Forge professionally since version 3. So, I find your "I'm ok, so there must be something wrong with your system" reply pretty ridiculous. Ben Message last edited on9/21/2005 5:45:15 PM byBen . |

This is exactly why I don't reply much in the forums any more. Someone tries to offer suggestions (which is the reason for the forums) and nothing but flames ensue. I have a couple of suggestions, but I won't mention them as I'll be flamed as well. Let 'em rip. |

No flames Kryten. Just frustration when I say there are problems with this software, and Geoff says "it's your system". If I've sucessfully run many previous versions of Forge, and suddendly 8 is giving me a lot of problems, I don't think it takes a big leap of imagination to realise where the issues are coming from. That was my point. Ben |

Nothing obvious other than that it appears to occur when you start playback from the chainer and switch windows. If that is that correct, what effects are in the chain? Does it occur when you use the window transport? It also looks like you have turned off the "Chain Per Datawnd" internal pref. Is that the case? J. |

Thanks very much for your reply J. I can't recall when that particular crash occured - not sure whether I was using the chain at the time. But I have had lockups, bizarrely, when 'ok-ing' effects such as pitch shift (internal effects) on part of a file. I've also seen SF 8 crash when, with a file playing, I hit Open and try to open another file. On hitting Ok, I get the creeping white screen thing. The effects I normally have in the chainer are a combination of Waves and UAD (DX) plugs. I'm generally using shortcuts rather than the window transport. Interestingly though, I have indeed turned off the "Chain Per Datawnd" pref. I know that's not recommended by you, and it's unsupported, but I do struggle without sharing the chainer between files. But, are you saying this is likely to cause major problems - like the crashes I'm experiencing? If that's the case, I'll certainly put the preference back to default and try working with that for a while. There seems to be a fair bit of a demand for the chainer to be shared - I don't suppose there's any chance whatsoever that somehow this could be worked into an update? I know it has major implications for you... Thanks again Ben |

I have only wild guesses on the white/frozen behavior, though I expect the safest workarounds are to disable Auto-play in the Open dialog and perhaps get in the habit of hitting Stop (or Alt+P) before you hit OK (or Enter) in preview dialogs. If you are using ASIO drivers, switching back to WDM may help. As for the shared chainer, yes, it's dangerous and, no, it won't return in an update, though we're considering bringing it back in a future version. In the meantime, for whole file processing, the Batch Converter can act as a shared chainer. If you wish to process individual selections, you might consider writing a simple script that applies your favorite packages (which can then be assigned to a toolbar button, as well). J. |
