Subject:Studio 8 - Lexicon Omega problems

I've been using SoFo Sound Forge Studio 6 for quite a while at work to record and edit our presidents's monthly messages for posting to the company website.

Everything works fine. So I upgraded...

Now I can't get Sound Forge Audio Studio 8.0a to work with the Lexicon Omega USB interface [http://www.lexiconpro.com/Omega/index.asp].

I sent Sony tech support an email three days ago, but no reply. Any ideas? (I know, stop fixing what isn't broken...)

Studio 6 still works. Here are the hardware interface preferences sections:

Sonic Foundry Sound Forge Studio 6:
Preferences | Wave:
Playback: Lexicon Win USB 1-2 In/Out
Record: Lexicon Win USB 3-4 In Only

Here is my best guess at what the settings should be for Studio 8:

Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 8.0a (build 63):
Preferences | Audio:
Audio device type: Lexicon USB ASIO
Default playback device: Output 1-2
Default recording device: Input 3-4

"Advanced Audio Configuration" section:
Driver name: Lexicon USB ASIO v.1
Buffering settings: 11 ms (500 samples)
ASIO clock source: Internal(44.100 kHz)

"ASIO Settings" section:
Buffer Size: 500
Number of Buffers: 8
Sample Rate and Size: 44.1 kHz 16-bit

With Studio 8 there is no response on the record meters, and no error messages. Everything else seems to be behaving "normally".

Any suggestions?

Does playback work? Is "Monitor" enabled in the record dialog?

Is the destination file 44.1kHz, 16-bit? In ASIO mode, the Advanced settings are provided by the device driver itself. Often, if a format is specified by the driver (as it is here), the driver will (quietly) reject all other formats.

FWIW, Audio Studio 6.0 did not include ASIO support. If the worked there, you may want to verify in 8.0 that setting the device type to "Windows Classic Wave Driver" and selecting the device in the the default playback/record device combos still works.

Alternatively, you can select the device in the Windows Sounds and Audio Devices control panel and just select the "Microsoft Sound Mapper" device type in Sound Forge 8.0 preferences.

In Studio 8:
Playback works fine.
"Monitor" is enabled.
The destination file is 44.1kHz, 16 bit.

I set up the "Windows Classic Wave Driver" in Studio 8 as it is in Studio 6. Playback works fine, record doesn't. Studio 6 still plays and records as it always has.

In Studio 8 I noticed that during "Record", the "Time Recorded:" counter doesn't change, it just stays on 00:00:00 while the [Recording] flashes red. This situation is true for both the ASIO and Wave drivers.

I was about to post this, then decided to try a couple of other things.
In Studio 8 with the ASIO driver, I tried the "Default Recording Device" as Input 1-2 (channels 1-2 can be both input and output). Now the "Time Recorded:" counter works, but the meters didn't register a signal.

Then I changed the "Default Recording Device" back to Input 3-4. Guess what? Both the "Time Recorded:" counter and the meters both work correctly -- a signal is recorded.

However, after exiting Studio 8 (and/or rebooting the computer) I'm not able to get things to work correctly again.

This is looking more and more like a driver/Studio 8 interaction problem. The ASIO driver is the current one posted on Lexicon's website but I called their technical support anyway to see if there is a newer one.

Lexicon's tech support said that they have had "many" reports of current Sound Forge products not recording correctly with the ASIO driver. Their suggestion was to use the Wave driver instead (or change programs). They said that it has been very difficult to work with Sony to track down and resolve the problem -- they don't know if it is on their end, Sony's end, or both.

Any suggestions on what to do next?
