Subject:Change sample rate broken?

Is it really possible that the change sample rate feature is broken in SF8. Or should I say still broken? When I change the sample rate in a file (not resampling it), the result is a mess. It worked fine in SF7 and every other version.

No problems here.

-What is "a mess"?
-What file type and properties?
-How are you changing the rate?
-What is the destination rate?
-Saving it? If so, what file type and properties?

Well, I get repeating dropouts (cyclical). The problem originated with my error. I was recording in Vegas at 24/96. However, my Echo sound card's driver was locked at 44.1. So the files are really 24/44.1 but are playing back at 24/96, or more than double speed. So I opened them in SF8 to change the sample rate (not resample). The result was the right pitch, but with repeating dropouts, making them unusable. I thought I remembered some sort of problem with changing sample rates when SF8 was new, so I tried the same command in SF6 and it works perfectly. So, although my files lack the luster of being recorded at 96 kHz , they are OK. But there is still the question of why SF8 couldn't fix the problem.

Is it possible that the dropouts are present in the source and just not audible at 96 kHz? Are they visible in the waveform?

Have you ever had similar issues playing back native 44.1 kHz files?

When you save a copy of the converted file, do the dropouts still occur? Are they visible in the waveform?

It is much more likely that this is a playback glitch than a file-damaging operation. In Options->Preferences->Audio, if you are using Microsoft Sound Mapper or Windows Classic Wave Driver, try increasing "Playback buffering (seconds)" by a tenth of a second or so and see if that fixes the problem.

If none of that resolves this, I vaguely recall an issue with PureWave if you are using the Echo device in Sound Forge, but I'll have to look up the details.

If you are certain that physical glitches are being introduced by Sound Forge, please be sure to fill in your system specs and provide as much detail as possible regarding a repro.

Thanks for your help. I'm away from my data for a couple of days but I will do some tests and report back. Thanks again! - Doug
