Subject:multitrack on separate channels

I've heard it said that you can record two audio sources (two microphones) on separate channels of a stereo track. One on the left and the other on the right. I have not been able to get this to work. Has anyone ever done this and how? I have Sound Forge XP 4.5 and I am using a USB microphone and a microphone plugged into the sound card. Thanks
