Subject:SF8 - import standard DVD?

I have a short film to score and have been given it on what looks like a standard DVD without any sync or timecode.

Is there anyway that SF8 can import a standard DVD so that i can sort of line up the DVD with my music (i know there's no timecode or frames, )

Just a general start/stop of the DVD with the music would help, can this be done?

I try to import the DVD but it says i need the Sony MPEG plug in, but have since been told that the MPEG won't really help with a DVD?

If you have Vegas 6 then use the File / Import / DVD Camcorder disc function. I wouldn't try to do this task in anything but Vegas.

If you want to score in other software then you can render the video from Vegas to some other format, such as DV .avi or MPEG1 or even WMV.

Hi Buckaroo,

The video on a DVD Video is in VOB file format. As Chienworks said, this first needs to be converted into a standard PC video format. I haven't tried it with Vegas, but it might work. Try Chienworks suggestion.

If you don't have Vegas, try doing a search on Google for DVD to Video conversion software. I'm assuming the DVD is not copy protected with CSS encoding. If it is, then you're out of luck.

If you have Vegas-6, register the free Main Concept MPEG utility which supports extracting the VOB (or ref. IFO) files from a video DVD. Once registered it also works with SF-8 extracting just the audio files. If you dont have the full ver. of V-6 it can be purchased. Generally takes about 10-15 mins to extract the picture and PCM audio, and another 5 or-so to save it to the HD.
I don't know if there's a Main Concept stand alone version of it so Vegas must be used to get the video. (as far as I know)
I've tried some of the free DVD rippers and had very poor results.
