Subject:Scanning for audio plug-ins

I have this problem that I can't seem to cure.

When I start up Sound Forge, the opening logo comes up, then a grey box saying 'scanning for audio plug-ins'. This then stays on the screen for while the program takes 5-10 minutes to actually start.

Sometimes, the grey box then stays on top of the programme for a few minutes, which is irritating as you have to work with it in the way.

Is anyone else having this problem?!

Thanks,

Tom

This sounds like a possible troublesome VST plugin, that is hanging Sound Forge. There's a couple ways to check.

1. Temporarily rename the folder that contains your VST plugins
This folder usually resides on your Windows installed hard drive
C:\Program Files\VSTplugins
So temporarily change the name of that folder to something like
C:\Program Files\VSTpluginstemp
2. When you have Sound Forge open goto OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>VST Effects
and temporarily change the folder paths to a folder that doesn't contain any VST plugins. Then click Apply, close out Sound Forge and then run Sound Forge again.

These 2 actions basically make it so that Sound Forge scans an empty folder for your installed VST plugins. So if you do that and it doesn't hang on start up any longer then you know you are dealing with a problem VST plugin.

There should also be a file named "vst_grovel.log" somewhere in My Documents that will help identify the offending plug-in. You can use Windows Search to find it, just make sure you include hidden folders in the advanced options.

If you find out which one it is, please report it back here.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the swift response.

However, I'm still stuck!

I had a look for the log file using windows search and couldn't find it.
So, I then tried the other method of renaming the plug-in folder.

When I went into sound forge, I noticed that it was actually looking for effects in a 'steinberg' vst plugins folder that was left from an old version of Cubasis VST.
I renamed that plugins folder and tried to change the target folder in Sound Forge, but was only able to choose an 'alternative' folder - and couldn't delete the entry for the default one.

Still having the same problem. Any more ideas?

Sorry for being so difficult!

Make sure you've installed the most recent update (8.0d). It's available in the Downloads section.
