Subject:saving the audio in an .avi without recompres

Hello,

Newbie - first post...

I have .avi files in dv format. I need to work on the audio but want to be able to resave the .avi file with the updated audio without recompressing the video portion. I know I can save the file as uncompressed but that will consume a lot of space. I want to keep the file exactly as it is except for replacing the audio. Any ideas?

Much thanks

Sound Forge shouldn't be touching the video at all if it's uncompressed or DV. It should merely copy the video data unaltered bit-for-bit into the new file.

Thanks much. Do you know how I might be certain that what it 'should' do is what it actually does?

Copy and paste your original files to another folder or location.. and try it for yourself.

Thanks Rraud,

Not knowing how much the file size might change due to changes in the audio I am not sure that I can deduce the effect by changes in file parameters. That would leave me with having to trust my eyes to see new compression artifacts. These videos will be the source materials for subsequent compilations which will require subsequent compression. I prefer not to have to trust my eyes to know whether Sony is recompressing the video. Something I can't see now could hurt me later.

I guess I could do a save of the audio file and record the time it takes and then save the avi file with audio within it and compare the two. That would let me know if something gross is happening. However if anyone could help me be certain that the video is not being affected that would still be appreciated. I have about 250 hours to do and I don't want to proceed until I am certain.

Thanks again

David

Judging by the significant difference in time between saving only the audio file vs saving the same audio in its .avi host file that something more than just saving the audio is going on. It could be time spent integrating the audio with the still untouched video but it would sure help me to know what is happening.

Thanks again

David

Considering that video data is often 10 to 100 times the size of the audio data and that Sound Forge has to save the entire file, it should take a lot longer to save a .avi file than a .wav file.

If your .avi file uses uncompressed audio then you can make all the changes you want to it and the will still be exactly the same size, no matter what edits you've done to it.

Thanks Kelly,

I decided to post the question to Sony Tech Support just to be safe and will in turn post their response here. I think you are right. It makes perfect sense. I just don't want to take any chances here.

All the best

David
