Subject:I Know: CAN'T Fix Distortion. Try?

I screwed up some audio tracks. I videotaped a concert with 3 Sony VX2100's that I forgot to lower the volume on manually, and the audio tracks are distorted. I likely can't fix them (I also have a soundboard capture, but I wanted to mix it with the camera audio tracks if possible), but can I get some options of what I can at least TRY just in case I can salvage them somewhat? I'm using SF 8.

Clipped peak restoration in the noise reduction package helps ... a little bit. Not much. It's really only good on digital clipping. It may help salvage some areas enough to be useful though.

Smoothing will help a little bit, but ultimately, you're hooped.

I have a friend (a very patient friend) who once tried redrawing the waveforms manually to reduce the clipping. After a few hours he did make some progress, but to about 4 seconds of audio. Time not well spent.

Ultimately it's a case of live and learn. Checklist before you record..if nothing else, err on the side of too little audio...THAT you can work with. A faded stained glass window can be brightened...a broken stained glass window with big chunks missing is just never the same.
