I'm recording a telephone interview, either analog or digital, with the end use to be posted on the internet for downloading (not streaming). When I tested this with my audio line in, Sound Forge 7.0 created a wma file, (I did select mono). Is this normal? Can I over ride it? Do I want to? Because most of the people who download this probably can't use the .wma version, I would like to convert it to a mp3 (it will be about 20 minutes long). Will this be determintal to the quality? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Sound Forge wouldn't create a .wma file unless you specifically chose .wma when you saved it. The default format is .wav. Once it's saved as .wma it's been compressed and you can't get back the original quality. However, that doesn't mean what you have isn't useful. Do you know what bitrate was used when you saved it? If it was 128Kbps or higher in mono then you probably have a pretty good file to work from. Load it back into Sound Forge and Save As, choosing .mp3. Most modern media players handle .wma. Several online music companies use .wma as their preferred format. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many people will be able to listen to a .wma file. |

Everything chienworks says is correct, I'd just add that .wma is a better format (to my ears) than mp3. At the same compression rate, .wma sounds better than an .mp3 every time. And just about everyone can play .wma's, except mac users and iPods, cuz Steve Jobs is a wanker. Format wars are so lame. Do you hear me Sony? .pca, lol |

I'm re-reading your question and if this hasn't happened already, DEFINITELY switch so that you record to .wav first. You can always compress it down to whatever format you want, but best to have the lossless .wav file as a master, in case you wish to copy to a different format. Making an .mp3 from a .wma is definitely not going to sound great...for voice it'll be passable but don't do it if you haven't already. |
