Subject:Program Closes When Opening a File

I've been using Sound Forge 8.0 for several months now. This morning I opened the program, previewed a sound file by highlighting it in the window (which worked), then tried opening it. BUT every time I try to open any sound file, the program completely closes. Any idea what's happening or is it time to reinstall? --Dale |

First, make sure you have the latest updates installed (8.0d, available in the Downloads area). If that doesn't take care of it, it's likely an issue with the auto-preview. As a workaround, you might just try hitting "Stop" before you click OK to stop previewing before opening the file. If this is still happening in 8.0d, please provide details on the file type and properties. Thanks, J. |

It still closes even if I do hit the stop button first. It's happening with all file types. I will try version 8.0d and report back. This is very strange because it's been working fine for months. |

Bad news. I just installed version 8.0d over the older version and the program still closes as soon as I open any sound file. This is really wacky. I have the full complement of Sony software products: Vegas, DVD Architect, Acid, etc.; all of them work but not this program. I don't have any viruses; in fact, the PC has never been online. I need to get this to work and secondly, why in the world did it all of a sudden develop this problem? Is the next step a clean reinstall? How do I do that without hurting the other Sony software? Need help from the Sony online community, please-- Dale |

If you un-check auto-preview, does the problem go away? How about opening from the Explorer? If the program "just closes", it is very likely a driver issue of some sort. Otherwise, you'd get one of our dialog boxes with the crash dump. So please fill in your system specs, including sound card, driver version, and which driver model you are using in Sound Forge. Also note whether the same sound card is assigned as the default Windows device. J. Message last edited on2/13/2007 8:26:48 AM byForumAdmin. |

Thanks so much for your help. It is certainly frustrating because I have been using it successfully for quite some time now; in fact, my other Sony audio programs, like Acid and CD Architect, work just fine. Okay, here’s what I discovered: If I uncheck auto-preview, the program still closes. If I try opening a file from the Explorer, I get the error message I have posted below. When I click out of this Error/Exception Occurred window, the program closes. I’m using XP Pro, version 2002, service pack 1, on a Dell XPS Pentium 4 CPU, 3.20 ghz, 2.00 GB of RAM; my sound card is a SoundBlaster Audigy 2, driver version 5.12.1. Here’s the error message I get when opening a file from the Explorer: Sony Sound Forge 8.0 Version 8.0d (Build 128) Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x214 IP:0x1004C69E In Module 'forgek.dll' at Address 0x10000000 + 0x4C69E Thread: GUI ID=0x218 Stack=0x12A000-0x130000 Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=001b EIP=1004c69e EFLGS=00010202 EBX=0000002b SS=0023 ESP=0012a08c EBP=001f44c8 ECX=001f44c8 DS=0023 ESI=0012a248 FS=003b EDX=0012a248 ES=0023 EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 1004C69E: 8B 88 14 02 00 00 F6 C5 ........ 1004C6A6: 01 74 13 8B 80 2C 02 00 .t...,.. This crash is in a very strange location unrelated to file i/o, which leads me to believe it is some type of stack corruption that eventually crashes elsewhere. Has any new hardware or software been installed recently? Anyway, a couple things to try: 1a) Open Forge, create a new file, synthesize some audio, and save it as .wav. Restart Forge and see if it re-opens. 1b) If so, close it, restart the app, and see if you can open it by selecting it a the bottom of the file menu. 1c) If so, close, restart, and see if you can open it via File->Open (or the Explorer). If all that works, there may be an issue with the files you are trying to open. Please provide more details on format, location etc. 2) If the problem exists even for new files, you might try resetting all user prefs (Hold down Ctrl+Shift while launching Forge). 3) As a last resort, completely uninstall and re-install Sound Forge. If none of these take care of it, it will probably be in your best interests to get in touch with tech support directly. J. Message last edited on2/14/2007 8:23:42 AM byForumAdmin. |

Okay, I tried to Open Forge, create a new file, but as soon as I selected to create a "new file" the program closed! So I tried resetting all user prefs and guess what? That did the trick! Everything works fine now. I can't explain what may have occurred, but let this thread help to serve others that may have this problem down the road. Thanks again, Dale |
