Wave hammer works wonders for this. Pick a threshold level that is around the level of the peaks of the music. Set the ratio up around 10:1 or so. This will reduce anything above the threshold down to that level.

If you're using the studio version of Sound Forge i'm not sure if it has Wave Hammer. If not, then Effects / Dymanics / Graphic can do a similar function, but takes a little more tweaking.

thanks Chienworks!

in reading up on Wave Hammer, I've seen mention of:

1. Multiband compression; am I correct in understanding that would NOT be better for the purpose I asked about?

2. iZotope Ozone, which I have; might it provide better results than Wave Hammer for the purpose I asked about?

many thanks!

Clapping, like most noise, is a rather broadband sound. Multiband dynamics breaks up the effect into separate ranges across the audio spectrum. Since clapping noise exists throughout most of the spectrum i wouldn't think that multiband dynamics would offer much advantage. You can play with it and see though.

As far as Ozone, you'll have to ask someone who has it. I don't.
