Subject:SF6 and BC5 no longer work...

Hi all,

I recently had to replace my motherboard and all Sonic Foundry/Sony products had to be reinstalled. I have been a SF6 user for years, even as I continue to purchase each upgrade (mostly due to much faster response time from SF6).

Now, as I reinstall SF 6, I get a "forge60.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" box. When I look at the error report data, the error signature blames mp3plug.dll ver 2.0.0.988 with an offset fo 000b691a.

I am working around this by using SF8, but it takes over a minute to come up, and over a minute for each plugin chain change. I really want to go back to SF6. I had a need for the batch converter (V5b) and had to reinstall it tonight - and it threw the same error with mp3plug.dll. Very troubling.

While I'm here - I just installed SF9 the other day and find the same very poor performance as SF8. Also, there has been a persistent bug for the last several years in the plug-in chainer that I keep hoping against hope will be fixed, but never is. That problem is when clicking on the different plug-ins in the chain, it will spontaineously reorder the plug-ins, and rename the chain to (untitled). This is very disruptive to my workflow... The problem is in 6, 7, 8 and now 9.

Thank you for your time, and I hope I can get a solution.

With warmest regards,

...Steve>>>

I'm not certain what is causing the mp3plug error. A full un-install/re-install should fix it. Otherwise, if you don't need mp3 functionality in 6.0, you can just remove the .dll from c:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats.

As for performance issues in 8 and 9, please fill in your current system specs in your forum profile.. Also, what does the splash screen report during these long startups and which plug-ins are you using in the chain.

Specific repro steps for the chain re-ordering would be helpful. Is it possible that you are using a very high screen resolution and dragging the plug-in tabs enough to change their order?

Thanks for the response...

Unfortunately, the function I was seeking was to do a batch of mp3 conversions - but I will try removing the offending .dll to see if that helps load SF6.

I have updated my system specs for you. I'm not sure what you are asking for with the splash screen - the version number? There are a couple of times that performance comes to a halt: first, on initial load of the program, then on starting the plug-in chainer and changing presets. In the second case there is just a white screen while the preset loads.

I am using a high resolution screen, and went to a trackball to insure I wasn't dragging during selection. Just clicking on the chain is enough to reorder it.

Thank you for your assistance....

On 4/06 Microsoft sent out a security fix for XP that caused problems of the sort you mention on some systems. The Knowledge base article 935448 talks about this and gives a pointer to a "hotfix". While this MAY NOT be your problem, it's probably worth investigating. My symptoms were not exactly those mentioned by Microsoft, yet the "hotfix" cured my problem. Basically, there are some installations where an updated library interferes with ActiveX.

Thanks for the tip...

Did the hotfix (and updated my bios, incidentally)... Unfortunately, same crash.

Solved! I took the newer mp3plug.dll from a later install of SF and moved it to the location of the old file. SF6 and BC5 are now functional!

Thanks for your help.
