Subject:Strange quirk in SF9 when copying 1 track

I have a stereo file that's made up of one channel of audio that was captured through my video camera's on-camera mic, and one channel that was captured through an external wireless mic connected to one channel of the camera's audio.
I want to create two new stereo files -- each one will be a Doubling of one of the two original tracks.
When I select the left channel of the original and copy it to a new stereo file, the result is what I would expect, and what I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be: the one original channel gets copied to both channels of the new file.
But when I select the Right channel of the original and copy it to a new stereo file, BOTH channels of the original get copied. The result is that the new file is an exact copy of the old file. Not what I want.

I'm pretty sure this used to work properly in the previous release of SF.
To get around the quirk, I have to copy the original Right channel to a new MONO file, and then copy that file into a new stereo file. That gives me the result I want, but the extra steps and the inconsistent behavior are a wee bit annoying.

This is a workaround, not a fix, but it might be faster than the way you're doing it anyway ...

Use Process / Channel Converter to convert from stereo to stereo, but select right at 100% for the source of both channels, and left at 0%. Save As to a new file name.

This is definitely a bug. It will be resolved in the next update. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Curious question, not really related to the bug but more to your procedure ...

Why do you need to create stereo files? If both channels are identical then a mono file would do the job just as well and only take up half the hard drive space.

I suspect you're quite right, Kelly.

These sound files are soundtrack files for a DVD, the soundtrack of which will be rendered as Dolby ac3, StereoDVD option. Would mono files work just as well, given that ultimate target format?

Indeed they would. Wherever a mono track is used to produce stereo output, the mono track is copied equally to both channels.
