Subject:select region from effects preview?

In previous versions of SF, when I'm previewing a narrow slice and then want to change the selection to a region, I could right click in the effects preview window and choose a pick that would allow me to select a previously defined region.

This seems to be gone in SF9? The only context picks are "original" and "all data". Is there now way to do this anymore? The regions list window doesn't seem to allow one to select a region during preview.

I am able to select regions directly from the ruler while preview is active (right click on the region marker and choose "Select Region"). I am also still able to bring up the Set Selection dialog from the Edit menu (if you prefer the old way).

I am able to select a new region from the Regions List, but, as you mentioned, just not while preview is active.

Unfortunately, all these alternative selection methods seem to bypass the effect.

I've submitted a bug for all this and should be able to get it fixed up in the next update.

Thanks,
J.

Looking at SF8, there is actually a "selection" button in the fx dialog box which is missing for me in SF9a. You're right that all of the working selection methods bypass the effect.

Another issue I've discovered:

"Zoom Selection" by double clicking the left vertical bar or right clicking it and selecting "zoom selection" crashes SF9a. This happens if the selection is less than a certain length. For me around 800 msec.

thanks,
Rocky

Not seeing this crash in 9.0a or my more recent build. Anything else I might be missing? What file type/format?

stereo *.wav file about 1 hour 28 minutes long, about 20 regions defined. 16 bit/44.1 kHz. I'll do some more experimenting tonight and capture the exception message.

my system specs are up to date with the exception that I switch the echo layla 3G from classic wave driver to ASIO and back as part of the debug process. I'll check that config too. The Layla is set to use WDM config when in "classic wave driver" mode.

The crash occurs when the data is very small in amplitude with many samples equal to zero. Try creating a new file and fill it with silence, all samples equal to zero. The exception report (now that I read it) says there was a divide by zero error. When there is plenty of sound, I can reduce the selection to 3 samples in length and zoom selection works fine. Here's the exception:

9b results:

Zoom selection now works for sections with some data values of zero.

There is still no selection button in effects preview window like in 8 and previous versions. Selecting using the regions window or dragging in the timeline does work now. Please bring back the selection button though - it's much more convenient.

Using my Echo Layla 3G set for WDM and Wave Classic Drivers phase scopes and mono compatibility meters do not work.

Using my Echo Layla 3G set for WDM and ASIO drivers phase scopes and mono compatibility meters only work for channels 1&2. The do not work using 3/4, 5/6, or 7/8 with a stereo file. 16/44.1 in both cases.

The same 2 cases act the same if the Echo card is set for Pure Wave.

I also have an M-Audio Sonica Theater USB. Phase scopes and mono meters work for channels 1/2 but not for 3/4 or 5/6.

I also had some trouble getting the channel assignments to stick. That is, after starting SF9b channel 1/2 would be assigned to Layla 1/2. I would change the assignments to layla 3/4 but they would not take. Channels 1/2 would stay assigned to Layla 1/2. After opening and closing SF this behavior stopped and it worked correctly.

thanks J,
Rocky

You can still bring up the Set Selection dialog directly from the Edit menu, even when an effect is open. Ctrl+Shift+D also works.

If you are talking about the hardware meters, I see this. Phase/mono only work if something is assigned to the first port. Will see if I can sneak a fix in for that.

I'm not having any trouble switching routing. Are you doing this on the meters or in prefs? Playback running? Does it repro consistently?

Hey J, I've been off line for a few days.

Yes, hardware meters is what I mean.

With regard to routing switching. It only happened the one time and I haven't been able to reproduce it. It was on the channel meters while stopped.

Thanks for being so active in the forum, it's great.

Rocky
