Started using 9.0c in earnest today. I'm not crazy about having to click on the channel buttons to hear left or right channel only. And being forced to lock the channel because placing the cursor anywhere else in the file takes it back to stereo is senseless. With dialogue editing, where comparing material on the left and right channels is essential, the old method of simply placing the cursor left or right on the fly was much better. Unless I'm missing something, I'd like to start begging to have that back! |

The problem is, that doesn't work if you have more than two channels. I suppose though, there are some of the old features that would be nice to have when we are working with only one or two channels. |

"The problem is, that doesn't work if you have more than two channels." Why? |

Exactly. The option to change playback to particular channel on the fly by placing the cursor in a certain position could apply to any number of visible channels. If it's too easy to do it accidentally, they could make it a selectable option. |

In the original stereo Sound Forge, if you clicked above the left channel zero line you would select the left channel. If you clicked below the right channel zero line you selected the right channel. If you clicked between the zero lines you selected both channels. Now, imagine three channels ... you could select channel 1 by clicking above it's zero line or channel 3 by selecting below it's zero line. But, where do you click to select channel 2 and where do you click to select all three channels? There's now way to distinguish between those two choices. |

Agreed. The old principal would have to be modified to handle the multi-channel files. But Sound Forge has been strictly a stereo file editor since its inception, and I would guess that the vast majority of users will continue to use it primarily for that purpose. So I think Sony really owes it to its longtime user base to not make inconvenient changes to methods that have existed forever, and should create an option to access the previous method when working on stereo files. |

I'm starting to think that many of the changes and new features that are making us long time audio only users stumble were added for the Vegas video folks. Video is clearly the primary market focus with SCS now so I can understand some these changes within that context. Otherwise, a lot of these changes simply don't make sense. |

'Tab' still cycles channel selection, fwiw. J. |

That's moderately useful, but because it cycles left/right/stereo it still doesn't allow for consistent switching even when channel lock is on (but it still beats having to move the pointer all the way to the channel selector). I know this is nit-picky stuff, but when a project requires many, many hours examining differences or similarities between the left and right channels, losing the instantaneous and intuitive switching is a major drag. Do you see any chance of that function returning in the future? |

Shift+Tab reverses the direction. Another thing you can do is select all or make a selection in the region of interest and use Ctrl+Click within the selection to toggle a channel on or off. I will submit a request to restore partial-caret behavior for stereo files. J. |

Thanks for the tips. I've experimented with each one of them, but unfortunately nothing takes the place of the ease of simply moving the mouse pointer to one side or the other and clicking. I do hope that function can be restored, at least in the stereo files. |

Try this: When playing, hold shift then click in the channel you want to hear - it should "solo" that one. You may find a slight annoyance with the loop region marker - if you do, just make sure your right endpoint is before your current cursor position, and you can click between channels (holding shift) to your hearts desire (even works on >2 channel files).
