I've come across a bit of a problem in my attempts to alter the playback routing options in the Preferences of Sound Forge 9.0c. Having recently upgraded to 9 from version 7, I decided to try playing around with a bit of multichannel. To start off, these are the choices for playback routing when I go to the Audio tab: Microsoft Sound Mapper Direct Sound Surround Mapper Windows Classic Wave Driver Creative ASIO M-Audio Delta ASIO SB Audigy 2 ZS ASIO 24/96 [E080] SB Audigy 2 ZS ASIO [E080] When I first went in, it was set to Microsoft Sound Mapper which (I'm assuming) must have just gone to my Creative Card, since I usually just use Headphones connected to that. Anyway, I initially selected "SB Audigy 2 ZS ASIO [E080]" and attempted to go play back my file. However, I got a message from soundforge about the audio device not supporting the sample rate of the file... then I went back and chose the other two Creative Labs devices in turn, and got the same message for each. The sample rate of the thing I was trying to play was 44.1kHz, which I never assumed would cause the card problems. After exploring the Preferences a bit more, I eventually selected the "Advanced" button under the audio tab, and got more information about the Creative Labs devices, where it listed the ASIO Buffer Latency (which it seems I can change) and the ASIO Clock Source (for which I can't find an option to alter). For the three respective devices, the ASIO Clock Source was the following: Creative ASIO - Internal: (48.000kHz) SB Audigy 2 ZS ASIO [E080] - Internal: (48.00kHz) SB Audigy 2 ZS ASIO 24/96 [E080] - Internal: (96.000kHz) After seeing this, I created 48kHz and 96kHz versions of the file, and tried playing them in the respective devices... and they worked. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I'm assuming this is happening because the Soundblaster card is internally locked at either 48kHz or 96kHz, depending on the output device and can't accept input at any other rate. And I suppose the Microsoft Sound Mapper worked because it was somehow resampling everything it sent tot he Creative card to 48kHz? Now, the M-Audio Delta card was another story. After the dissapointing discovery with my Creative card, I attempted routing the first 4 channels of my file to the 4 analog outputs of my Delta 44. I noticed in the M-Audio Control Panel that whenever I played a file, it reset its sample rate to match. Pity I didn't opt for the Delta 66. Anyway, if I am right in my assumption about the Creative card, I suppose I'll have to find a replacement for it that's more suitable for this application (though the Audigy is good with games). Any recommendations? I've looked at the M-Audio Revolution 7.1, which has 8 analog line-outs in the form of 4 stereo 1/8" mini jacks... would that have the same problem with the locked internal sample rate, or would it have the same ability to reset its internal sample rate as its more professional cousin that I already use? I've had a bit of similar weirdness. I use the Classic wave drivers and usually use a MOTU Ultralite as my mic input. If I go into a session later (with the Ultalite off) , SF9 usually reports "no MOTU audio devices detected." That's fine. Perfectly normal. But since the patch I've been getting additional messages that the MOTU driver isn't found and then goes through a quick "no MOTU audio devices detected again" and then another Windows Classic Wave Driver complaint and finally loads the program. I think we're possibly experiencing the same kind of grief from different angles. |
