Subject:How do you stitch multiple AC-3 files together?

Here is the problem. My main video in Vegas has audio of different volumes in each scene. So I selected Split points where the differences occur.

Now I want to render each section to a seperate AC-3 file so I can choose the correct DialNorm for each section.

After doing this I have multiple AC-3 files that I want to join together. Can this be done? I want to keep the Video as one file, so I don't want to re-render the video.

Are you using VMS or Vegas Pro?

If Pro, just use volume envelope to correct volume differences, and this will negate any splitting/AC3 funny-business.

If VMS, and you have the full version of SForge, same idea, but in soundforge. Use a single file with the vol envelope ("V") and sort out vol differences. Again, this saves splitting file, playing with different DialNorm values and therefore solves your problem.

Even in Vegas Studio, one can split the timeline audio event at those points and adjust each section individually.

[I could not speak for VMS since I have not used it, only the full version]

I have V8 and SF9. Okay thanks. I'll just "eyeball" the volume differences and adjust the gain of each part. This should be good enough.

But I am suprised that Sound Forge and Vegas don't support AC-3 files more. You can't even import, only export. I know AC-3 is a delivery format and not meant to edit, but sometimes you run into a situation like above. At least allow us to mark different sections on the timeline, and apply different DialNorm to them when it is encoded. That would be a handy feature. Then I wouldn't have to adjust the gain.

UPDATE: I have now submitted this suggestion to Sony, so hopefully they will listen to my suggestion.

How is being able to set distinct regions to different DialNorm values better or easier than adjusting the gain? I can't see any advantage.

It's not a technical issue or an oversight. SCS products do not currently import AC-3 files due to licensing restrictions on the format.
