Tonight, (when I need to do some editing), all my Sony programs started to act funny. At first, Sound Forge 9 and Vegas would not start.

After several reboots and running Norton to check the system, I finally got Sound Forge to run but it won't play anything, and will not record. The only clue I have is this message ....

The playback device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist.

The CardDeluxe appears to be working in Windows2000, as checks in the Control Panel, etc show it as having no problems.

Any other thoughts on where to check? I'm lost as to why the programs are suddenly deaf.

Sometimes parameters change without rhythm or reason. Norton's and other antivirus apps are notorious for interfering with audio programs... which may or may not have caused your problem.
That said, open Sound Forge and select Options> Preferences> Audio under Audio Device Type Select Windows Classic Wave Driver

That, and reinstalling the Digital Audio Lab's driver did it. Thanks!!

Gosh, that was weird how it just got dumb all of a sudden.
