Im hanging to watch my IMAX HD 1080p DivX files through the PS3 in glorious 5.1 surround.. for now im stuck with my laptop, VGA and cheap stereo output...
This is pretty good news on the Divx side.
I encode hd-divx to 1440 or 1920 interlaced format.
They look & playback nice on the hd-divx player I own. This player plays back the interlaced divx file without any problems. Motion is the same as the original footage.
Playing back interlaced Divx on the computer though doesn't seem to work that well.
So I hope that the playstation 3 also supports the interlaced hd-divx videos, it should, the processor is fast enough. Nice feature to add to the PS3.
AVCHD still appears to be the newer standard and best choice.
1: It plays back on many hardware devices I own including a several portable DVD players, my home DVD player and my little Archos.
2: It encodes much quicker than AVCHD. This is a really big deal if you use it to archive full length movies.
3: You can do alternate audio tracks. I have a couple of documentaries where I like the director's commentary. Sometimes it is nice to have both a stereo and surround audio track embedded.
4: The quality is very good. I can hardly see the difference on a regular sized TV. Yeah maybe a newer codec might do it better, but if you can't see the difference who cares.
5: The CPU overhead is really low. I can play back HD DivX files on an old PIII laptop we have laying around. I don't even own a PC fast enough for smooth AVCHD playback.
6: DivX does menus. These only play back properly on my PCs and one of my DVD players, but when the menu doesn't work, it still plays back the main title just fine.
7: When you embed DivX into a web page, it plays back consistantly accross both Macs and PCs and all the major web browsers.
